If your printer is a fax model and you are experiencing a fax problem, try the troubleshooting steps in this document to resolve the issue.
Step one: Access the fax activity log
You can check the fax activity log for error codes and other information that can help resolve fax issues. To access the fax activity log, follow the steps below.
The steps vary according to the type of control panel.

Follow these steps if your printer has a touchscreen control panel with a white background.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe the tab at the top of the screen downward to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Fax Status icon
.

Select the option to view or print fax logs.

From the Home screen on the product control panel, touch the Fax button.

Touch the Fax Menu button.

Touch the Fax Reports button.

Touch Fax Activity Log.
The Fax Activity Log prints.
Step two: Troubleshoot fax error codes
The following sections reference fax error codes (that might be listed in the fax activity log) and steps to resolve the errors.
Fax error code 232
Possible causes of this error include the following:

A communication failure has occurred between the two machines.

The user at the remote machine might have pressed the Stop button.
-
The power at the remote machine has been interrupted, or deliberately turned off, causing the fax session to be interrupted.
To solve the issue, try the following steps:

Resend the fax at a different time when telephone line conditions have improved.
-
If the error persists, and error correction is in use for the fax session, disable the Error Correction setting.
Fax error code 282
The printer has not received any data during the initial fax reception, but the modem has not detected a remote disconnect. The remote machine is probably transmitting sync frames instead of data and has either jammed or broken.
Ask the sender to verify that the sending machine is working correctly and request that they resend the fax.
Fax error code 321
A communication error occurred with the receiving fax machine due to poor telephone line conditions.
Resend the fax at a different time when telephone line conditions have improved.
Fax error codes 344-348
Possible causes for these errors include the following:

The remote machine failed to respond to a fax command from the local machine due to the connection being interrupted.

The user at the remote machine might have pressed the Stop button.
-
In rare instances, incompatibility between the two machines can cause the remote machine to terminate the call.
To solve the issue, try the following steps:

Resend the fax at a different time when telephone line conditions have improved.

If the error persists, and error correction is in use for the fax session, disable the Error Correction setting.
Fax error code 381
Possible causes for this error include the following:

The remote machine failed to respond to a fax command from the local machine due to the connection being interrupted.

The user at the remote machine might have pressed the Stop button.
To solve the issue, try the following steps:

If the error persists, and error correction is in use for the fax session, disable the Error Correction setting.
Step three: Check fax reports
Fax reports are available to help resolve fax transmission problems. To run a fax text report, follow the steps below.

Before you begin, make sure that the telephone cord is securely connected to the fax port on the back of the printer.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe the tab at the top of the screen downward to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon

Scroll to and open the following menus:

Fax Setup

Touch Run Fax Test.
The printer prints a fax test report.

Review the report results:

Pass: The report contains all of the current fax settings for review.
-
Fail: The report indicates the nature of the error and contains suggestions for how to resolve the issue.

A fax T.30 trace report has information that can help resolve fax transmission problems. If you call HP for help in resolving these problems, print a T.30 trace report (using the steps below) before you call.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Setup button
.

Touch the Service menu.

Touch the Fax Service menu.
-
Touch the Print T.30 Trace button, and then touch the Now option.
NOTE:This procedure prints a report for the last fax job, successful or not.

To generate a report for each unsuccessful fax job, touch the If Error option.
-
To generate a report for each fax job, touch the At End of Call option.
