Reconnect a previously installed printer to the Wi-Fi network if you purchased a new router, changed your Internet Service Provider (ISP), or changed your network name and password.

Connect a printer with a touchscreen control panel

Use the printer control panel to connect your printer to your network.

Connect the printer to the Wi-Fi network (printers with a touchscreen)

Use the Wireless Setup Wizard from the printer control panel to connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network.

  1. Place the printer near the network router.

  2. Make sure paper is loaded in the main tray, and then turn on the printer.

  3. From the Wireless  or Setup  menu, select Network setup or Settings, and then select Restore Network Settings.

  4. Get the network name and password. Go to Find the wireless network password or PIN to connect an HP printer for more information.

  5. From the Setup, Network, or Wireless settings menu, select Wireless Setup Wizard.

  6. Select your network, and then enter the password.

    NOTE:

    If the Wireless Setup Wizard is not listed, select Wi-Fi Protected Setup or WPS, select Push Button, and then follow the steps to connect to the network.

Print a Wireless Network Test Report

Print a Wireless Network Test Report to find information about your printer network connection or to troubleshoot connection issues.

  1. Print a Wireless Network Test Report:

    • Inkjet printers with a control panel menu: Open the Wireless, Network Settings, or Setup menu  to locate the list of available reports.

    • Most inkjet printers without a control panel menu: Press the Wireless  and Information  buttons at the same time, or press the Wireless  and Start Copy Black  buttons at the same time.

    • LaserJet printers: Press and hold the Wireless button  for 10 seconds or until the Ready light blinks, or go to the Wireless menu and select Wireless Network Test.

    • Laser NS and Neverstop Laser printers: Press and hold the Resume  and Wireless  buttons for 3 seconds.

    • DeskJet 6000 and 6400, ENVY 6000 and 6400, and Tango printers: Touch and hold the Information button  until all control panel buttons light up, and then touch the Information  and Resume  buttons at the same time.

  2. Review the information on the report, and then follow any instructions provided to troubleshoot connectivity problems.

For printers without a display, use Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), HP Smart, or connection settings in the printer homepage.

If one method does not work, try another method.

Install the HP Smart app

The HP Smart app is the main software for your printer.

Install the HP Smart app to your mobile device or computer. Once installed, you can open the HP Smart app and use it to set up your printer on your network.

Connect the printer using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (printers without a touchscreen)

Use the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) button on your router to connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network.

  1. Place the printer near the Wi-Fi router.

  2. Put the printer in WPS connection mode.

    • Most printers without a touchscreen control panel: Press and hold the Wireless button  for five seconds or until the wireless light starts to flash.

    • HP Deskjet 6000 and 6400, ENVY 6000 and 6400, and Tango printers: Press and hold the Wi-Fi button  and the Power button on the back of the printer for five seconds until the blue bar flashes.

  3. Within two minutes, press and hold the WPS button  on the router until the connection process begins.

  4. Wait for the Wireless light or bar on the printer to stop flashing. The printer is now connected to the network.

Use a Wi-Fi Direct connection to access the wireless setup tool from the printer homepage.

  1. Place the printer close to your computer or mobile device and to the wireless router.

  2. Turn on the printer, and then make sure ink cartridges are installed and paper is loaded in the tray.

  3. Get the Wi-Fi Direct printer name (Example: DIRECT-72-HP OfficeJet Pro 6970) and password.

    • Printers with a control panel menu: Touch the Wi-Fi Direct icon or button  to view the Wi-Fi Direct name and password. Or from the Reports menu, print a Network Summary or Network Config page that lists the details.

    • Printers without a control panel menu: Print a network configuration report or help page. The name and password are listed under the Wi-Fi Direct section.

      To print a network report, use a method that matches the control panel buttons on your printer.

      • Press the Information button .

      • Press and hold the Wi-Fi Direct button  for 3 seconds.

      • Press the Wi-Fi Direct  and Information  buttons at the same time.

      • Press and hold the Resume button ( or ) for up to 10 seconds or until the report prints.

      • HP DeskJet 6000 and 6400, ENVY 6000, Pro 6400, and Tango printers: Touch and hold the Information button  until all control panel buttons light up, and then touch the Information  and Cancel  buttons at the same time.

  4. On your computer or mobile device, open the Wi-Fi or wireless settings to view the list of available wireless networks.

  5. Select your Wi-Fi Direct printer name from the list of networks, and then enter the password to connect to the printer.

  6. In a web browser, type 192.168.223.1 into the address bar, and then press Enter.

  7. If a login or certificate window displays, complete the information to finish opening the EWS.

    • If a website security certificate displays, click Continue to open the printer homepage.

    • If a login window opens, type admin for the username, and then type the PIN found on the label located underneath or on the back of the printer, or the password set by the printer administrator.

  8. From the Network menu, select Wireless (802.11), and then select Wireless Setup Wizard.

  9. Follow the instructions to select your Wi-Fi network name and enter the password to complete the connection.

  10. Reconnect to the computer or mobile device to your Wi-Fi network.
